Term 1 - Week 6 2025
Principal & Deputy Principals Message

Dear Families,
Ash Wednesday this week signifies the beginning of Lent. A time of reflection and contemplation. We use this time to repent and seek forgiveness. To use prayer to continue to develop our relationship with God and to be mindful of what we have and are grateful for. Lent is a powerful time for all Christians.
There are many exciting things happening across our wonderful school. It has been so fun to watch Bike Education in action for our Yr 4 children. This is an invaluable program run across many schools in South Australia. Learning to ride a bike is a lifelong skill that can give children independence while supporting their physical fitness and mental wellbeing.
Our Yr 3 and Yr 5 children are preparing for NAPLAN in the weeks to come. We value the information NAPLAN provides for us as a school. We also make every effort to ensure our children feel calm and ready to access the tests.
Wakakirri rehearsals are starting under the guidance of Miss Riccio and Mrs Oldfield. We had so many children audition and are excited to be making use of our new performing arts space!
All classes are starting to make use of our incredible gymnasium. We will arrange an afternoon soon where families can come in and have a look through this impressive facility. I walked in yesterday to see two classes learning Badminton! A sport that is impossible to practice outside on windy days such as these!
Our Annual General Meeting will be held on Monday March 31 in the School Library at 5:30pm. The purpose of the AGM is to share our successes from 2024, financial status and nominate new Board members. In Catholic Education South Australia schools, the role of the school board is an advisory one. We meet once per term to share information about the school and develop and ratify policies and procedures. If you are considering nominating for our school board, please contact Dan Cowan via email.
Thanks again for your ongoing support,
Dan Cowan, Principal & Michelle Thomas, Deputy Principal

LENT
The Church Calendar is different to the calendar used by the rest of the world for special events and celebrations. The Church Year always begins in November and finishes in November.
On Tuesday, our children celebrated Shrove Tuesday and close to 1000 pancakes were cooked by 5 outstanding parents. They produced perfect pancakes that were enjoyed by appreciative children. Many thanks to: Jenny, Yessenia, Kylie, Melissa and Nicole. We are very lucky to have such dedicated parents!

Ash Wednesday was celebrated by the Year 3-6 children attending Mass and receiving the Ashes on their forehead. Each year, the children join the Parish for a special celebration. Fr Roderick spoke about going ‘the right way’ during Lent and gave the example of having a beautiful, bright chariot when travelling. Unfortunately, the beautiful chariot does nothing for our travels when we insist on going the wrong way with it. Ash Wednesday reminds us that as we travel for 6 weeks during Lent, we focus on doing what is right and moving closer to God’s heart in our actions, thoughts and words.

Project Compassion is the start of Lent. We encourage children to give generously to the Project Compassion box that is in their classroom. These funds help Caritas to help others in the world, such as providing clean water to villages. Please encourage your child/ren to give what they can to the Project Compassion box in their room.
Lent is also a time of renewal. Catholics focus on prayer, fasting and giving money to the poor during the next 6 weeks. This tradition is very old. It is a timely reminder that when we do something out of love and for others, God is very pleased indeed.
THOUGHTS:
It doesn’t matter what you do, if it lacks love, it doesn’t rate.
PRAYER:
God of the poor and of the suffering, unite us to Your heart so that we can see ourselves through your eyes during Lent. Help us to be generous in our giving to Project Compassion. Amen.

This can include a variety of things such as helping out at events, or offering skills and equipment. Volunteering doesn't necessarily require attendance at meetings. If you are interested in playing an active role to assist us, please email Michelle Thomas at mthomas@saps.catholic.educ.au
