Principal & Deputy Principals Message

Dear Families, Staff and Students,

We hope you are well and are coping with the change in season! There have been many coughs and runny noses around the place at the moment! Hopefully the extra-long weekend provides an opportunity to rest and recover.

This Sunday is special in the liturgical calendar as we celebrate Pentecost. At Pentecost we acknowledge the gift of the Holy Spirit. That which is unseen yet ever present in our lives. We celebrate the gifts and talents we each have and thank God for the opportunity to put them to positive use in our school, community and homes. We can also look to nature for moments of Grace that remind us of the Holy Spirit in our lives.

Over the past two weeks our Reception – Yr 2 classes have been attending swimming lessons at the Salisbury Aquatic Centre. This is the first time we have done this and it has been an extraordinary success. We are grateful to our staff, volunteers and the wonderful team at Salisbury Aquatic Centre for their efforts. The learning and growth shown by our children in such a short time has been so pleasing to see.

On Friday 6 June, our pupil free day, we will be spending the day working on assessment, reporting and how we document and keep evidence for our children receiving additional support.

Thank you and take care,

Dan Cowan, Principal & Michelle Thomas, Deputy Principal

Catholic Identity Updates

BLESSED CARLO ACUTIS
It is with much excitement to announce that we will have a special Relic visiting St Augustine’s Parish School on June 19.

If you are not familiar with what a Relic is, this may be helpful.  The Catholic Church honours those who have died holy lives and are considered potential saints.  People who have lived a life aligned with Jesus’ teachings and are now in Heaven.  And from Heaven, we can call on them to help us with our problems or requests here on earth.

What do we know of his life?  It was short.  He was born in 1991 and died in 2006 from a brief illness.  He was only 15.  But in those short years, Blessed Carlo was a model of faith to all.  Please see the information about him provided in this newsletter.

To qualify for sainthood, the Catholic Church requires signs – usually health issues that medicine cannot heal.  In the case of Blessed Carlo, the 2 miracles that are attributed to him are the following:

  • In 2020, a 3 year old was healed of a pancreatic defect after his mother prayed to Carlo.
  • In 2021, a 21 year old woman in Costa Rica was healed after a bike accident where she suffered a brain bleed.

Both cures and healings were medical mysteries.

Blessed Carlo is not a saint yet, that is why he has been given the title: Blessed.  He was going to be made a saint on April 27 this year but when Pope Francis died, the canonisation of Blessed Carlo was put on hold.  We don’t know when his canonisation will happen to be made an official saint, but we hope it will be soon.  Once this happens, Blessed Carlo will be known as Saint Carlo Acutis.

A Relic of Blessed Carlo Acutis will only visit limited schools and parishes.  We are one of 4 and are very lucky.  The Relic is a portion of his hair.  The rest of his body is in Italy and has become the inspiration of many people.

Our children will be able to visit the Relic on Thursday June 19.  If you wish to join us, more information will be sent to families next week.  This is an incredible opportunity to be in the presence of a holy young man, one who lived a life of faith.

SACRAMENTAL PROGRAM 2025-26
I have had many inquiries about the next Sacramental Program.  If you are wanting your child to receive the Sacraments of Reconciliation, Confirmation and Eucharist, please collect a blue form from the Office, fill in the details and return it to the Office staff.  You will then be contacted.

THOUGHTS/PRAYER:
To my children:
I love you more than your mistakes, more than your moods, your grades and your messy room or choices.  I love you more than you ignoring me, your eye-rolls in frustration and your silence and your confusion in trying to understand me.  I love you more than any achievement or any failure you will ever endure.  I love you when you love me, when you don’t love me and when you don’t like me.  I will love you today, tomorrow and always.  Because there is nothing you can do to not make me love you.  God.

Year 2 Lenswood Apple Orchard Excursion

In Year 2, we have been learning about where our food comes from and how it makes its ways from farms to shops then to our homes.

On Thursday week 4 the Year 2 students took their learning to Lenswood Pick Your Own Apple Orchard. It was an exciting day for our curious learners as they learnt about the planting, growing, and picking processes of apples. With their official Pomologist in Training vests on, students explored the orchards, watched a tractor demonstration, tasted freshly squeezed apple juice and got to pick their own apples! Our students loved munching on their fresh apples with so many apples for fruit the next day.

A big thank you to Emily from Lenswood who shared her knowledge and experiences with us, as well as all our ESO’s and parent volunteers.

Swimming Week: Reception - Year 2

In Weeks 5 and 6, our Reception to Year 2 students participated in their very first swimming lessons at the Salisbury Aquatic Centre. The children were eager to dive into this exciting new experience and develop essential water safety skills.

Students were placed into four groups, Turtles, Jellyfish, Dolphins, and Stingrays, according to their water confidence and swimming ability. Each group worked closely with an instructor to build their skills through a range of engaging activities. These included diving underwater, signalling for help, practising basic swimming techniques, floating, and learning beach safety and survival strategies.

It was fantastic to see our students grow in confidence over the week, support one another, and thoroughly enjoy their time in the pool.

A big thank you to the instructors at Salisbury Aquatic Centre for guiding our students through such a valuable and enjoyable program. A special thank you also goes to Mr Cowan and Ms Thomas for organising the swimming lessons and making this wonderful experience possible.

Year 5 Art Gallery & Botanic Park Excursion

On Wednesday, week 6, the Year 5 students had a fantastic day exploring the Adelaide CBD as part of their Science and Art units. The day began at the Art Gallery of South Australia, where students observed and reflected on a variety of artworks to inspire their creative ideas. They then visited the Botanic Park to explore the natural processes of weathering and erosion, linking directly to the Earth & Space Sciences Unit.

Students were encouraged to sketch something that captured their attention- whether from nature or the gallery- which would later form the basis of their art piece back at school. They’ll apply the style and techniques of a chosen artist to bring their sketches to life in their final assessment.

It was a day filled with opportunities to practise our learner qualities, especially being collaborative, curious, and thoughtful.
